About Continental Pinstriping
A specialist hand-painted pinstriping studio based in Shimane Prefecture, Japan — blending traditional techniques with modern custom style.
Our Story
Continental Pinstriping was established in Shimane Prefecture as a dedicated studio for hand-painted custom artwork on motorcycles, cars, helmets, and accessories. From intricate line work on fuel tanks to bold side-stripe applications and detailed wheel finishes, every piece is painted by hand with an emphasis on precision and individuality.
The studio has been active in Japan's custom culture scene, participating in events such as the X-5 CROSS FIVE 2010 Japan Tour Final and MOTORGARAGE GOODS gatherings. Over the years, Continental Pinstriping has collaborated with a network of builders and brands including D-club Customcycles, Decont Custom, and Shix Motorcycle.
A hand-painted pinstripe on a helmet transforms a functional piece of safety gear into a personal canvas of self-expression. Unlike printed decals or mass-produced graphics, each brushstroke carries the subtle character of the artist's hand, creating one-of-a-kind lines and curves that flow with the helmet's contours. Whether it is a classic single-line stripe tracing the crown or a more elaborate custom pattern that extends across the surface, the result is a distinctive look that reflects the rider's individual style. The paint bonds with the helmet's finish, becoming part of the gear itself rather than sitting on top as an afterthought.
The process of hand-painting a helmet requires patience, steady hands, and a deep understanding of how lines will read from different angles. Artists typically work with specialized fine-line brushes called swords, loading them with enamel paint that flows smoothly onto the curved surface. Each stripe is pulled in a single continuous motion, with no room for correction once the brush touches the shell. This precision work demands years of practice, as the artist must account for the helmet's compound curves and adjust pressure and angle accordingly to maintain consistent line weight throughout the design.
Custom helmet pinstriping can range from subtle accent lines that complement the helmet's existing color scheme to elaborate compositions that cover significant portions of the shell. Many riders choose to coordinate their helmet artwork with matching stripes on their motorcycle's fuel tank or fenders, creating a cohesive visual identity across their gear and machine. The durability of hand-painted work means that with proper care, these designs last for years, developing a gentle patina that adds to their character. Each helmet becomes a rolling piece of automotive art, as unique as the rider who wears it.
